Word Study

Students are placed in a spelling group based on periodic assessment of their developmental spelling level. During word study, students typically sort spelling words, discuss patterns and common elements, and practice spelling through a variety of activities. Students may also study word meanings, prefixes, suffixes, roots, and synonyms/antonyms. In
addition to studying spelling words, students will also study a new vocabulary word each day (see list below). Students are expected to be able to correctly spell their spelling words as well as define vocabulary words. Tests are given every other week, typically on Friday.

Students are expected to complete spelling activities from the assignments sheet below. All word study assignments are due on the day of the spelling/vocabulary test.

  • Word Study Assignments Grading Rubric

Students should bring home a purple word study folder each day that includes a list of spelling/vocabulary words and a description of assignments. It is also strongly recommended that students visit our class web page on Spelling City for additional practice throughout the week. Extra copies of spelling lists can be found below.
