Robotics Clubs Begin!

10/14/2021

Fourth and fifth grade robotics clubs met for the first time this week. Fifth graders meet afterschool on Thursdays and fourth graders meet afterschool on Tuesdays.

We began both meetings by discussing what makes something a robot. Students came up with these characteristics of robots:
  • programmable
  • designed for a purpose
  • mobile
  • have moveable parts
  • use sensors
We then discussed the purpose of robots. The consensus was that robots have three main purposes:
1. To do things we cannot easily do
2. To do things we do not want to do
3. To do things more efficiently than we can do

Students watched a short clip about robots in use at Amazon's warehouses and discussed how robotics and automation is changing jobs.

Finally, students began building a simple Vex robot called the Speed Bot. This is a quick build and will be used as students learn the basics of Vex IQ programming next week.
